What is the best baseball team ? In a baseball scoreboards feature, we take a look at the top 5 MLB teams. Baseball is an extremely popular game in the US. Every year the World Series Championship is held by the Major League Baseball. This league is further divided into two sub leagues, the National League and the American League. Each league has three divisions, east, west and central. In this article we take a look at the five best baseball teams today.
1. New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have been the best team in the East division for many years. The club was founded in Baltimore in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles and was renamed the New York Yankees in 1913. The baseball scoreboards show that the New York Yankees have won the World Series 27 times, the most recent time being in 2009. Since its inception, the team has welcomed some of the greatest players of all times such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Yogi Berra. Forty four Yankees have been inducted into the hall of fame.
2. Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox is one of the top teams in the Eastern Division. It was founded in 1901. The team was renamed as the Red Sox from the Red Stockings in 1908. The Boston red sox have won the World Series 7 times, the most recent being in 2007. Their rivalry with New York Yankees is the most historic in North American professional sport. The Boston Red sox’s baseball history is full of memorable moments such as when they won the World Series in 1946. Since 2003, the Red Sox has become one of the most successful teams and every home game is sold out, which is a record for the past seven years.
3. Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies is also an Eastern division team. The team was founded in Philadelphia in 1883. Though the Philadelphia Phillies has won the World Series only a couple of times, the most recent being in 2008, they are emerging as one of the most successful teams in the Eastern Division. They have a heated rivalry with the New York Mets. In 2010, the team surpassed 100 consecutive sell outs and in the past few years has generated a massive fan base.
4. St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals is a Central Division team. It was founded in 1882 and has been known as the Cardinals since the 1990. They have won 10 World Series Championships, the most recent being in 2006. After the New York Yankees, St. Louis cardinals were the first team to win the World Series in their first season, in 1926. They have intense an rivalry with the Chicago Cubs.
5. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers is a Western division team and was it founded in 1883. They have won the World Series Championships 7 times, the most recent being in 1988. They hold the record for reaching the finals the most times in the National League for 18 times, and have a great and longstanding rivalry with the San Francisco Giants.
Top 10 Major League Baseball Teams of All Time
Since the National League was founded in 1876, I think it’s time that we evaluated the 10 best teams to ever play in MLB. Baseball’s greatest teams have similar traits. They all have Hall of Famers, World Series titles, and odd stories of success. However, despite not being someone from Sports Illustrated or ESPN, you may be very critical of my list. However, the bottom line is that I made this ranking based on stats and a variety of other criteria.
Prior to being the Oakland Athletics, the A’s resided in Philadelphia and shared the City of Brotherly Love with the Phillies. However, the A’s that we know today were a very different franchise in 1931. Managed by arguably the greatest manager ever in Connie Mack, the 1931 Athletics won 107 regular season games.
What makes this team pretty odd is that they had a tie on their record. Back in the early days, their was no such thing as extra innings. If two teams had the same score at the end of the ninth inning, the game was marked as a tie. Mack actually played and managed in 76 games that ended that way. However, his A’s had a formidable lineup that included five Hall of Famers. They were one of the oldest rosters to ever win a World Series with the average age for players being 32.
To add insult to injury, their batting was superb. They had a run differential of +232 (they scored 232 more runs than they allowed). Batting was their strength, but they also did not have a starter who lost more than eight games. Equally impressive is that stars like Jimmie Foxx had a .947, which would be almost insane by modern game standards. They were a century-defining team that had multiple players hitting above 20 home runs.
This team was special. Their one mark against them is the 1931 World Series. In seven games, they lost to the equally impressive but forgotten St. Louis Cardinals. The A’s didn’t return to a World Series for another 41 years. It was the last time the A’s would play in a championship with Connie Mack as well. This team belongs in baseball royalty despite this because of their crucial all-around success, which is something rarely unmatched even by teams that have won the World Series.
A Night With the Best Baseball Team in New York
About a half-hour before a mid-August Brooklyn Cyclones game, a family of three, a reporter and a middle-aged man dressed in a Jedi robe walked into an elevator at Maimonides Park. As the door closed and they began their ascent, the Jedi turned to the others and asked, “So, what planet are you all from?”
“Um, Brooklyn,” responded the matriarch of the family. The Jedi proceeded to hum “Mad About Me,” by the Mos Eisley Cantina house band, Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, as if to tell them he was from the planet Tatooine.
When the elevator doors opened and they stepped out onto the concourse, they joined hundreds of other Jedi knights and Padawan learners fanning out across the ballpark, mingling with the mere mortals who came equipped with scorebooks, pencils and baseball gloves. Out beyond the right-field wall, in the area known as the Backyard, a few hundred others were pounding brews and playing cornhole, blissfully unaware that a baseball game — the event that their ticket said they had paid to see — was about to begin. The two main draws on this particular Saturday were Star Wars Night and the $50 all-you-can-drink deal.
