Which city has hosted a major league baseball all-star game? Atlanta In The Mix To Host 2025 MLB All Star Game, Says Manfred

Which city has hosted a major league baseball all-star game? Baseball has always been more than just a game. As John S. Bowman and Joel Zoss stated in The Pictorial History of Baseball “As part of the fabric of American culture, baseball is the common social ground between strangers, a world of possibilities and of chance, where ‘it’s never over till it’s over.'”

It is an American tradition rich in legends, folklore and history, a never-ending story where every game is a new nine-inning chapter and every player has the chance to be the hero. Through the years, every franchise has had its share of superstar players that stand out above the rest. They are the ones that bring the fans out to the ballpark and only one game brings them all together at once, the All-Star Game.

The first Major League All-Star Game was played on July 6, 1933 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. It was initiated at the insistence of Arch Ward, a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, to coincide with the celebration of Chicago’s Century of Progress Exposition. For over seventy-three years, the “Midsummer Classic” has remained a fan favorite showcasing the top talent in baseball.

All-Star teams were originally selected by the managers and the fans for the 1933 and 1934 games. From 1935 through 1946, managers selected the entire team for each league. From 1947 to 1957, fans chose the team’s starters and the manager chose the pitchers and the remaining players. From 1958 through 1969, managers, players, and coaches made the All-Star Team selections. In 1970, the vote again returned to the fans for the selection of the starters for each team and remains there today.

Not surprisingly, New York City has hosted nine of these contests dating back to 1934 when the game was played at the Polo Grounds.

The Polo Grounds also entertained the game in 1942.

The game was held at the old Yankee Stadium in 1939, 1960, 1977, 2008. The 1977 game was one-year removed from its renovation that saw the Bronx Bombers play two seasons at Shea Stadium, the home of the Mets.

The Mets hosted the game at Shea in 1964 and in their new home, Citi Field, in 2013.

The game found its way to historic Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, the former home of the Dodgers, just once in 1949. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1959.

New York has had six baseball parks in its history, the only one yet to host the All-Star Game is the current, new Yankee Stadium. A date has yet to be determined if/when the game will return to the Big Apple.

Chicago has hosted the game seven times, including the inaugural game in Comiskey Park as part of the Chicago World’s Fair. The White Sox hosted the game three times at Comiskey (1933, 1950, 1983) and once at U.S. Cellular Field (2003). The Cubs hosted the game at Wrigley Field in 1947, 1962, 1990.

Braves to host 2025 MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta after losing 2021 festivities over Georgia voting laws

Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, will host the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced in a press conference Thursday afternoon during the owners meetings.

“I commend Terry McGuirk, Derek Schiller, the entire Braves organization and the Atlanta Sports Council for leading this effort,” Manfred said. “As a model of success on and off the field, the Braves deserve to host the All-Star Game. Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta will provide fans a world-class experience in 2025. We look forward to working with the Braves and local leaders to deliver a memorable All-Star Week that brings people together and benefits the community in many ways.”

With the All-Star Game also comes several days worth of fun, most notably the Home Run Derby which takes place on the Monday night. The All-Star Game is a Tuesday night in July.

This will mark the third time that Atlanta has hosted the Midsummer Classic. Atlanta Stadium (later named Fulton County Stadium) hosted the event in 1972, the seventh season with the Braves in Atlanta after their move from Milwaukee. In 2000, the Braves’ relatively new home, Turner Field, also hosted the annual festivities.

Recall that Truist Park was set to host the All-Star Game in 2021, but commissioner Rob Manfred decided to move the event to Denver (Coors Field, home of the Rockies) in protest of a voting bill by the Georgia State Legislature. The Braves ended up winning the World Series that season.

The All-Star Game this past season was held in Seattle. In 2022, it was Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, which was originally supposed to host the 2020 Midsummer Classic. That was obviously cancelled due to COVID-19’s impact on the season. Between that and moving the 2021 game, there’s been some shuffling in recent years. Philadelphia has already been awarded the 2026 game to celebrate the United States of America’s Semiquincentennial (you can say 250th anniversary, which is exponentially easier).

Atlanta In The Mix To Host 2025 MLB All Star Game, Says Manfred

Baseball fans of the Atlanta Braves might not have to wait that long before the city hosts the MLB All Star game again. This is certainly interesting considering the controversy over the ASG being removed from Atlanta in 2021. However, it is not a surprise to see Atlanta in the mix to host again so soon after the disappointment of missing out on 2021.

During a Baseball Writers’ Association of America meeting in Seattle during the MLB All Star week, MLB commisioner Rob Manfred mentioned that Atlanta was in the mix to host the MLB All Star game in 2025 at Truist Park. Other cities reportedly part of the mix include Baltimore’s Camden Yards, Toronto’s Rogers Centre, and Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

If selected, it would be the third time Atlanta would host the All Star in its history. Looking back, it has certainly been a while since the city city has hosted the MLB All Star game. The first time was in 1972 at the old Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium, while the second time (and most recent) was in 2000 in Turner Field.

Atlanta was scheduled to host the All Star game in 2021, but the game was moved to Coors Field in Denver in protest of the Georgia State Legislature’s passage of the Election Integrity Act of 2021, which recieved controversy at the time, with accusations that the law suppressed voter turnout. Manfred said at the time that “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box”.

Politics aside, Atlanta has been long overdue to host the All Star Game. With a new state-of-the-art baseball park and a great location right by The Battery, baseball fans in Atlanta can have a little bit of optimist that the MLB All Star Game could return to the city sooner rather than later.
