Max Scherzer
The New York Mets traded one of the highest-paid players in baseball to the Texas Rangers. Max Scherzer waived his trade clause to facilitate the move.
David Robertson
Before dealing Scherzer, the Mets made an intra-divisional trade that sent reliever David Robertson to the Miami Marlins.
Mets general manager said “it’s not a firesale” following the Scherzer and Robertson trades. The team is 50-55 on the year and 6.5 games out of the final NL wild card spot.
Jordan Hicks
The Toronto Blue Jays made a splash for their bullpen when they added Jordan Hicks from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton soon followed Hicks out of St. Louis, as they were traded to the Rangers.
Lance Lynn
The Los Angeles Dodgers added some pitching depth with the acquisition of Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly from the White Sox.

With Ohtani off the table, attention turns to some top starting pitchers who could thrive in a playoff team’s rotation. Mets starters Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander fit the bill, but their twin $43.3 million contracts could make moving them difficult.
Elsewhere, USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale identifies the Padres’ Blake Snell, the Cardinals’ Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty, the Cubs’ Marcus Stroman and Kyle Hendricks and the Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Lorenzen as the top pitchers who could be moved.

Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, who finally is startling to look like the guy who won the 2019 NL MVP award with the Dodgers, could be the best position player available.
The Cardinals have the greatest array of talent available with outfielders Carlson and O’Neill, infielders Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong, and catcher Willson Contreras on the block.
Other names to watch: First baseman C.J. Cron and All-Star Game MVP Elias Diaz of the Rockies, outfielder Tommy Pham of the Mets and third baseman Jeimer Candelario of the Nationals.
